Supporting the transition to a zero-carbon built environment by automating and streamlining manufacturer data for smarter procurement.
As the construction industry faces increasing pressure to meet ESG goals (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and carbon reduction targets, the task of evaluating and specifying sustainable materials has become a significant administrative hurdle. EcoSpex is changing that landscape by building a national platform that connects manufacturers with the AEC industry through a digitized, automated procurement ecosystem.
The core mission of EcoSpex is to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon built environment. While the team brings over 27 years of experience in green building science, their recent focus on R&D and innovation has transformed their service from a manual verification process into a sophisticated SaaS platform.
EcoSpex solves a major pain point for developers, architects, and engineers: the “documentation drain.” Currently, reviewing the sustainability and technical compliance of materials can involve wading through dozens of disparate documents. EcoSpex’s Verified Premium Listing (PEL) involves a deep analysis and standardization of manufacturer data, reducing the documentation review process from over 60 documents to just five, turning hours of work into minutes.
EcoSpex is not just looking at the local market; they are building for global scale. With “Product Passports” becoming mandatory in Europe and increasing demand for green building compliance in the USA and Asia, EcoSpex aligns Canadian manufacturer data with international standards.
Closer to home, EcoSpex has recently achieved significant milestones, including:
- Federal Support: Awarded funding by NRC/IRAP and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) via the Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative (DRAI).
- Industry Validation: Signed over 61 Letters of Intent from industry partners and joined the MaRS Climate Discovery Team.
- Strategic Growth: Currently working with a Toronto-based investor and a new CTO to support their first $1 million investment raise.
EcoSpex is currently moving into a pilot phase focused on both new construction and retrofit projects. These pilots allow manufacturers to test their automated sustainability and performance documents on real-world building scenarios, providing developers and AEC professionals with a “one-stop-shop” for verified data.
The goal of these pilots is simple: validate the time savings and compliance effectiveness of the platform while gathering feedback from the AEC Working Group, a group of subject matter experts and peer reviewers from the developer community.
EcoSpex joined SSRIA to lean into the power of collaboration. As they refine their platform during the pilot phase, they are eager to network with SSRIA members to discuss how automated sustainability reporting can support the growth of green building product manufacturers within the Alberta ecosystem and beyond.
“We believe transformation happens through collaboration. We are excited to show how our automation can support the SSRIA mission and vision.” – The EcoSpex Team
